"Opal" 0-4-2 Tank
locomotive. |

"OPAL" is an 0-4-2 side tank of traditional British
narrow gauge design and based on those engines produced by the Hunslet
Engine Company of Leeds. Hunsiets first entered the narrow gauge market as
early as 1870, supplying many side and saddle tank locomotives to ironstone
and slate quarries, particularly in Wales. |

The model represents a typical
Hunslet with two side tanks containing feed water for the boiler and
incorporating brass fillers. |

Features include a generously
proportioned brass dome (optional), twin safety valves, boiler bands, brass
window frames, chimney top M (optional), whistle, name-m plates etc. In
choosing the 0-4-2 wheel arrangement for these larger models, we have
produced a locomotive which, because of the trailing axle, is able to
negotiate curves of 15' or less, safely, whilst reducing the "tail wag"
common on 0-4-0 locos with a long rear overhang. |
